He is setting off on a monthly patrol of 6,000 hectares of community land to check on wildlife. The country he will cover inspires many adjectives: harsh, magnificent, daunting. But for Ristan it brings to mind the most important word of all: home.

Purpose of Workshop:
At the invitation of the Forestry Agency of the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism (MNET) in Mongolia, a workshop to discuss a proposal to establish a REDD+ Roadmap Taskforce was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on 13 September 2011. The workshop was conducted jointly by the Forestry Agency, the UNDP Country Office, Mongolia, and the UN REDD Programme / UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre.

UNDP ADMINISTRATOR HELEN CLARK MEETS A HERDER FAMILY IN HUSTAI NATIONAL PARK. (CREDIT: UNDP)
Ulaanbaatar - United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark traveled 100 kilometres west of Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, today to Hustai National Park to meet with herders, women entrepreneurs, representatives from the national Chamber of Commerce and other beneficiaries and partners of UNDP programmes in the country. Inside a cluster of gers, which are Mongolian traditional round felt dwellings, Helen Clark toured a range of UNDP project exhibitions and spoke with those who have been involved with the initiatives in the areas of environment, livelihood creation and local governance.

Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the National Emergency Management Agency and the United Nations in Mongolia joined efforts to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tragic accident of the helicopter carrying officials of the Government of Mongolia, staff of the United Nations, journalists and the crew in Malchin soum of Uvs aimag. They were on an official humanitarian mission to determine how the world could help the many Mongolians affected by the dzud of 2001. |

In the framework of the 11th GTI Consultative Commission Meeting, a Joint Session between BAC and the GTI Consultative Commission was organized on 1 September, further facilitating the dialogue between the public and private sectors.

The Altai Mountains are home to a variety of endangered species such as the snow leopard and the world’s largest wild sheep altai argali. Inhabited mainly by nomads, these mountains - stretching from the Gobi Desert in the south to the Siberian Tundra in the north, and forming a border between Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China - hold several biodiversity hotspots mostly located in remote areas with limited access.

Herders began the enormous task today of burying millions of livestock carcasses in the three aimags that were severely affected by harsh winter conditions. With support from the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the herders are now part of a Cash-for-Work programme which provides them with immediate income while also reducing health risks by burying carcasses and preventing water contamination.
