His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway is to pay his first visit to Mongolia November 3 to 6 in his capacity as UNDP Global Good Will Ambassador.

During his visit the Crown Prince will visit UNDP-supported projects which are being implemented to assist Mongolia in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, in particular strengthening democratic governance and ensuring human rights. In addition to meeting high officials of the Mongolian Government, Crown Prince Haakon will also meet with local community members involved in local governance initiatives.

Brief information about the visit

The Crown Prince will:

  • Pay a courtesy call to Mr. N. Enkhbayar, the President of Mongolia. 2008 also marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Norway and Mongolia.
  • Have a discussion with the lawyers and beneficiaries at a Legal Aid Center which provides legal services for the poor and vulnerable.
  • Visit “Our Home” Ger School located at Ulaanbaatar’s largest waste disposal site where children living and working on the site receives basic education.
  • Visit the Nutrition Training Centre in Songinokhairkhan district.
  • Deliver a lecture on the Millennium Development Goals to students from the Mongolian State University.

  • Visit one of the project sites of the “Local Governance Support Programme” in Khentii Aimag and have a discussion with members of the local community involved in local governance initiatives. He will also meet with the Governor of the Soum to discuss the issues addressed by the project and progress that has been made.

HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway was appointed Goodwill Ambassador in 2003 and has since been visiting several UNDP Country Offices such as Burundi, Guatemala, Sierra Leone, Cambodia and Tanzania. Advocating for progress toward the Millennium Development Goals is at the core of Crown Prince Haakon’s UNDP engagement. He has used his ambassador status to express that even though development is a long-term process, the international community has to live up to the promise of achieving the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) by 2015.
