Strengthening Environmental Governance in MongoliaBookmark and Share

Goal of the project:

The overarching goal of the project is to assist the Government of Mongolia to achieve its objective to “improve consistency of policies for protection, proper use and rehabilitation of natural wealth; make transparent and accessible information related to nature and the environment, and; increase public participation and monitoring in the protection of nature“.

Immediate objectives:

The proposed project will address environmental governance issues by focusing on three interrelated areas that will attempt to:

  1. Streamline and strengthen Mongolia’s environmental legislative framework;
  2. Strengthen environmental mainstreaming mechanisms; and
  3. Strengthen the capacity of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to engage in environmental governance processes.

Intended results/outputs:

Output 1: Road map developed and implemented to harmonise and strengthen Mongolia’s environmental legislative framework.
Output 2: Environmental mainstreaming mechanisms developed for adoption by government, including in relation to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), Environmental Auditing (EA), climate change, and environmental and socio-economic impacts of mining.
Output 3: Resource mobilisation strategy for Environmental NGOs/CSOs developed and educational capacity of the press institute is strengthened in relation to environmental issues.
